An eReader in Every Backpack

eReaders Promote Reading

I was driving home from work the day before Thanksgiving, listening to K-LOVE on the radio. The DJ discussion topic was eReaders and whether they would make a good gift for a young child who loves to read. An English teacher called in to give her positive support of eReaders as promoting reading. She explained how some school districts are considering using eReaders to stretch their budgets.

Free Classics

She also explained that there are many classic books whose copyrights have expired and are available for upload for free. According to Amazon’s Kindle Fire information, there are over 2 million out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books available free. I’m certain that most teachers would be able to fit that option into a curriculum!

Libraries and eReaders

Libraries and eReaders have partnered to make library books available for check-out. The experience is quite different from that of my childhood. My early library memories are of sitting in the window seat of our public library, reading Peter Rabbit. I loved that book and checked it out as often as I could. Do you suppose you would have to keep quiet when you upload a library book?

An eReader for Every Child

While the tactile experience of paper books is lost on eReaders, the possibility of every child having access to millions of books is amazing. Its possible the book-filled backpack could be a thing of the past. An eReader in every backpack. That would be a good thing!

Accessorizing Your eReader

Personalizing Your eReader

Accessorize and personalize. No boring book covers allowed! When I was in school, here’s how I accessorized my books:
Supplies needed:

  • One brown paper grocery bag
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Crayola crayons
  • Scotch tape
  • School book

 

Directions: Cut grocery bag down one long side; cut bottom off to end up with a big brown bag rectangle. Open up school book and line up on brown bag rectangle to utilize the best part of the bag to cover the book. With pencil, mark cutting lines on brown bag for top and bottom of book. Cut the bag on the lines, leaving a few inches on either side to fold over the book edges. Fold the paper sides over the edges of the book; use tape to form pockets to finish the fit of the book cover. (Be sure to do this with the book closed so your beautiful custom cover fits perfectly.) Let your imagination run wild with your Crayola crayons, accessorizing and personalizing your book. Proudly show off your original creation to your friends at school.
